Our story took place two hundred years ago in the city of Teveria in northern Eretz Yisrael. In those days, the Jewish settlement there began to flourish. At first, Jews from Sefardic countries moved there. They slowly began to breathe new Jewish life where before there was only a spiritual wasteland.
The dalet minim market in Warsaw was busy. Many stalls with lulavim were scattered about the large market. Next to them were piles of haddassim and aravos, but esrogim? Where were the esrogim? There wasn’t a single esrogim stand!
There was a G-d fearing, rich man whose sons all went on the proper path. One day in the summer, he assembled his sons and said to them, “My dear sons, since you are adults, I invite you to go off on your own way. Travel wherever you like, learn Torah, and look for a good wife. I will give you a sum of money to cover the expenses of the journey.
Our story took place in 5776, three years ago. You might remember that it was a Hakhel year. In a Hakhel year, Chassidim travel to the Rebbe en masse to be with the king. Not only during Tishrei is 770 packed with guests; it’s like that all year.
One of the mitzvos that the Jewish people are commanded is to build the Beis Ha’Mikdash in Eretz Yisrael.
“Yanky, come over here,” said the teacher with a serious look on his face. Yanky looked down. He got up and went over to the teacher’s desk.
The class boarded the bus happily. They had waited a long time for this annual trip that was a welcome relief from their studies. They settled down and chattered. When the bus set out, they waved goodbye to their school, Beis Chana of Tzfas, and when they left the area they recited the Tefillas Ha’Derech.
It was a difficult time for the Jewish people. The secret police in communist Russia made every effort to wipe out Judaism. Many Jews did not withstand the test and joined the communists in order to save themselves. During this time, it was the Rebbe Rayatz and his Chassidim who, with mesirus nefesh, preserved Torah and mitzvos and even influenced others. They taught Torah secretly and helped with everything having to do with mitzva observance.
It was 5749, a special year. The Rebbe made a number of special announcements about this year: T’hei Shnas Moshiach Tovah, T’hei Shnas Maasim Tovim. The Rebbe also referred to this year as the Shnas HaYeled v’haYalda and Shnas Ha’Binyan
Our story took place 1000 years ago in a country past the Asian desert and near the Sambatyon River. That country had a king who loved the Jews. The Jews lived peacefully and learned Torah.
The Weitzman family lived in Boston where their son Chaim was born. The parents were not generally religious although they did keep a few mitzvahs like kiddush on Friday night, a Pesach seder, fasting on Yom Kippur, etc.
It was 5724/1964. Rabbi E.L. Klein, a talmid chacham and yirei shomayim traveled to the United States on a fundraising trip for a network of boys’ elementary school yeshivos.
