The Rebbe Rayatz often refers to his beloved teacher, Rashbatz (Rabbi Shmuel Betzalel Sheftel), in his diary. Rashbatz was a great Chassid and enormous gaon who was devoted to the study and ways of Chassidus. It is hard to believe that such a Chassid was once a Misnaged!

Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn (later to be the Rebbe Rayatz) was on a long journey on behalf of his father, the Rebbe Rashab, which involved big projects on behalf of European Jewry. His schedule was packed. The following week he needed to visit Petersburg, Moscow, Smolensk, and Lubavitch in Russia, Kiev in the Ukraine, and meet with his father in the town of Menton in France.

Yitzy: What do you mean? He comes to all the events, to davening and farbrengens. Compared to the rest of the regulars who come to the Chabad House, he is actually quite active!

At the edge of the town of Lemberg lived a poor tailor. Reuven the tailor was his name. He was an expert tailor as well as a jolly person. He made a meager living from the few sewing jobs that he got from the Jews in the town. His tailoring always turned out well and everyone was satisfied with the work that he did.
R’ Motti Gal a”h, shliach in Ramat Gan, was walking around and trying to decide which group he should join. Then he noticed someone familiar. He took a good look and realized it was Shimi, a friend from the neighborhood, who wasn’t yet a Chassid.
Out the window could be seen hills, valleys and mountains. The long train made its way toward Kremenchug, the big city near Lubavitch.

A small house made of old wood stood on the side of a mountain, among the mountains between Kitov and Kosov, as though hiding in its shade. As far as the eye could see were the Carpathian Mountains in their full glory. G-d’s creation is magnificent indeed.
Adina looked around the full hall. In another few minutes, the Yud Shvat farbrengen would begin, and the room was filling up with Chassidim and Jews who came from all over.
