A rabbi was walking down the street when he saw a member of his congregation going into a treif restaurant and sitting down to eat. The rabbi was shell-shocked but wouldn’t dare go inside. However, when the first opportunity presented itself, he went over to this Jew and bombarded him: “What were you doing inside that non-kosher eatery?”

This story took place over 40 years ago. Reb Yitzchok Nemes, of blessed memory, a stamp dealer who lived in Crown Heights, was offered a deal that would earn him a lot of money. R’ Yitzchok went to meet with Tenkel, another stamp dealer. They sat down to discuss the deal but in the end, the idea was dropped.

It is particularly difficult for sellers of poultry and meat—who stand to lose significantly if critical stock is found to be substandard—to avoid the temptation of fudging on the kosher status of meat they sell.

Parents often support their grown children by helping them with monthly expenditures, covering a down payment on a house, paying for the expenses of a simcha (happy occasion)—such as the bris of a newborn grandson, new-baby paraphernalia—and other such gifts. Are the children obligated to pay maaser (lit., “a tenth”; refers to the practice of tithing earnings for charity) on the money they receive?
