Kiddush Levana

“One should be careful and make an effort to recite the Sanctification of the Moon while dressed in dignified and attractive garments, in the street and ‘in a multitude of people [wherein] is the glory of the King.’ This applies also in those places where people have not been conscientious about this until now (because they lived among non-Jews). One should also be careful in regard to the time of the Sanctification of the Moon…

“Further, and this is the main point, the Sanctification of the Moon should be performed with the specific intention to speed, hasten and actualize the immediate arrival of David the King Mashiach, through an increased appeal and entreaty for the Redemption, as expressed in the conclusion of the Sanctification of the Moon: “And they will seek the Lord their God and David their King, Amen.”

Some of the Rebbe’s customs by Kiddush Levana: By the paragraph of ברוך עושך the Rebbe lifts himself up three times and then touches his teeth (like in the movement of stroking ones mustache), this is repeated three times.

The Rebbe writes (Igros Kodesh vol. 11 page 150, letter #3539) “most certainly you are careful in Kiddush Levana – a Segulah for teeth”.

Once, when the Rebbe came out for Kiddush Levana,  but the moon wasn’t visible, due to the cloudy weather – the Rebbe related that once the Rebbe Rashab, at a similar situation, quoted a question that the Tzaddik Reb Meir of Premishlan asked: How did the Yidden do Kiddush Levana in the dessert when they were surrounded with clods from all sides? And he answered: Moshe Rabbeinu would wave a piece of clouds and the clouds would move away. The Tzaddik then showed how Moshe would do it, and this caused the the clouds to move for him as well. The Rebbe Rashab concluded the story and did the same.

The Rebbe concluded and said: If anyone here can do so – we will then be able to do  Kiddush Levanah. Someone present commented to the Rebbe that the Rebbe should do it. The Rebbe answered: “I did my part by saying the story”. 

The Rebbe then said that he will return soon for  Kiddush Levana. He then walked his mother – Rebbitzin Chana, home for Havadalah, Upon returning the skys were already clear and the moon was seen shining. (Toras Menachem vol. 4 page 160)
