The year this story took place, the Baal Shem Tov changed his usual routine and right after Havdala on Motzaei Yom Kippur he went to the beis midrash to conduct a tish. After all, it was a festive day and it was a mitzva to eat and rejoice.

The Festival of Sukkos is so called because of its central Mitzvah: to dwell in a Sukka for seven days.
On Wednesday, the first day of Chol HaMoed Sukkos (the second day of Chol HaMoed in Eretz Yisroel), the sixth annual gathering of Tzeirei Agudas Chabad in the United States took place in Brooklyn (in a large hall not far from 770 Eastern Parkway). The Rebbe said about this gathering that the beginning took place already at the farbrengen on Motzaei Yom Tov, and that the kinus was in the middle of the farbrengen. So, if it started at the beginning of the Motzaei Yom Tov farbrengen, obviously, our leader, the Rebbe himself, participated in it.

The Holy One Blessed is He, says to them, “Fools of the world! Whoever toiled on the eve of the Sabbath will eat on the Sabbath, but whoever did not toil on the eve of the Sabbath from where will he eat on the Sabbath? Nevertheless, [I will accede to your request]. I have an easy Mitzvah and its name is Sukka. Go and perform [it].”
The eve of 13 Tishrei 5643/1882. It was approaching midnight when the Rebbe Maharash got out of bed and sat down. His face shone with a special light. He wore a pocket watch which he detached from its chain. He then took a piece of paper from the table in front of him, turned the hands of the watch to 11:51 and inserted the paper to block the hands from moving. * Presented to mark the passing of the Rebbe Maharash.
The question is asked: Why was it necessary for there to be the histalkus of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe? Here we had a Jew who showed open miracles… We could have proceeded together with him and thus complete the number of years remaining until the coming of Moshiach!
